One of the world’s best Elvis Presley tribute artists will perform at the Rice Theater on April 29 at 7 p.m.
Donny Edwards, 36, will perform approximately 30 songs spanning the entire career of Elvis from the 50’s to the 70’s.
Edwards grew up in Lake Jackson, Texas. He explained that people told him all of his life that he had a striking resemblance to Elvis.
“I’m a huge Elvis fan so it was a compliment,” said Edwards.
In 1996, he went to Elvis Week in Memphis, Tennessee and met many people that actually knew Elvis. Edwards explained that many of them thought that he was an Elvis performer.
“It got me to start thinking about it,” he said.
When he went to Las Vegas in 2001, many of the Elvis performers there thought that Edwards was a performer also because of his appearance but he told them that he was there strictly on vacation.
He finally decided to try out performing like Elvis and entered a local competition in Lake Jackson. Edwards said that he had never sang professionally in public and up to that point had only sang along to songs on the radio in his car. He entered his first Elvis competition and took first place.
Since that time, he has been performing professionally for eight years touring around the world visiting Canada, Japan, Australia and South America.
Edwards has also performed with the same musicians that Elvis performed with such as D.J. Fontana, Elvis’ drummer, the band Sweet Inspiration and The Jordanaires.
Edwards’s Elvis show features approximately two hours of songs ranging from his entire musical career.
He does numerous costume changes during the concert and sings songs from several eras.
“I like to perform the live performance years of the 1950’s and 1970’s,” said Edwards.
“We try to recreate an authentic Elvis show.”
Edwards said that his favorite Elvis song to perform is “Suspicious Minds.”
“As an Elvis fan, to see the imprint this man made with his music and how he touched other people is amazing,” said Edwards. “It was his style that was unique. He could sing anything such as power ballads, rock, gospel and country.”
Edwards said that he ranked in the top three of Elvis performers in the world.
“We hope everyone in Acadiana Parish comes out,” said Edwards. “I think we present a very authentic Elvis show. Bring the family and the kids.”
Special guest Sundance Head, a 2007 finalist on "American Idol" will open the show.
