Swampyville's Ask the Politically Correct!
Question:
What was the Spanish/American War?
Politically Correct Resolution:
At the ending of the nineteenth century the United State's was a
sovereign nation that wanted to maintain this status. It was
the internationalists that called it an "Isolationist" nation,
because it didn't want to get involved in overseas conflicts.
The Spanish/American War.
(Global Building)
(Wikipedia used for most of this article)
The Spanish–American War was a conflict in 1898 between Spain and the
United States. Revolts against Spanish rule had been endemic for
decades in Cuba and were closely watched by Americans; there had
been war scares before. By 1897–98 American public opinion grew angrier
at reports of Spanish atrocities, magnified by "yellow journalism". After
the mysterious sinking of the American battleship Maine (the Catalyst) in
Havana harbor, political pressures from the Democratic Party pushed the
government headed by President William McKinley, a Republican, into a
war McKinley had wished to avoid. Compromise proved impossible, resulting
in an ultimatum sent to Madrid, which was not accepted. First Madrid,
then Washington, formally declared war.
Although the main issue was Cuban independence, the ten-week war was
fought in both the Caribbean and the Pacific. A series of one-sided
American naval and military victories followed on all fronts, owing
to their numerical superiority in most of the battles and despite the
good performance of some of the Spanish infantry units. The outcome
was the 1898 Treaty of Paris, which was favorable to the U.S. followed
by temporary American control of Cuba and indefinite colonial authority
over Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines. The defeat and subsequent
end of the Spanish Empire was a profound shock for Spain's national
psyche. The victor gained several island possessions spanning the
globe and a rancorous new debate over the wisdom of imperialism.
Thus, (the United States gained there much wanted warm water ports
to extend their World Wide influences).
American interest in Caribbean
In 1823, the Monroe Doctrine stated that further efforts by
European governments to colonize land or interfere with states
in the Americas would not be accepted by the U.S., but Spain's
colony in Cuba was exempted. In 1890 Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan
wrote The Influence of Sea Power upon History, which credits the
rise of Britain to world power to the Royal Navy. Mahan’s ideas
on projecting strength through a strong navy had a powerful
worldwide influence, especially Japan. Theodore Roosevelt, later
Assistant Secretary of the Navy under President McKinley and an
aggressive supporter of a war with Spain over Cuba, was also strongly
influenced by Mahan’s conclusions. Americans had long been interested
in Cuba (and Hawaii), since several U.S. presidents offered to purchase
it from Spain (James Polk, Franklin Pierce and Ulysses S. Grant),
and others expressed their hopes of future annexation.
Historians debate how much Americans were interested in obtaining
an empire, while noting that the European powers had in recent
decades dramatically expanded their empires, especially in Africa
and Asia. The United States seized this opportunity to become
an international empire themselves.
Thus, began the "gradual transformation" of the United States from
one of isolationism to one of internationalism.

Father's Day Tribute!
By L. Don Oliver
Many of children, go to bed;
Nary a pillow, for their head;
Making do, with what they've got;
Fatherly effection, they have not;
Mothers cry, alone each night;
Hopes and dreams, far from sight;
Two or three jobs, they daily go,
What tomorrow brings, they never know;
To the single mothers, I wish to say;
Thank you all, on this Father's day;

Question:
What was "Manifest Destiny"?
Politically Correct Rsolution:
Manifest Destiny was the 19th century American belief
that the United States was destined to expand across
the North American continent, from the Atlantic Seaboard
to the Pacific Ocean. It was used by Democrats in the
1840s to justify the war with Mexico; the concept was
denounced by Whigs (Republicans), and fell into disuse
after the mid-19th century.
Advocates of Manifest Destiny believed that expansion
was not only wise but that it was readily apparent
(manifest) and inexorable (destiny).
The concept of American expansion is much older, but
John L. O'Sullivan coined the exact term "Manifest Destiny"
in the July/August 1845 issue of the United States Magazine
and Democratic Review in an article titled "Annexation."
It was primarily used by Democrats to support the expansion
plans of the Polk Administration, but the idea of expansion
faced opposition from Whigs like Henry Clay, Daniel Webster,
and Abraham Lincoln (the first Republican President) who wanted
to deepen the economy rather than broaden its expanse. John C.
Calhoun was a notable Southern Democrat who generally opposed
his party on the issue, which fell out of favor by 1860.
Thus, the Civil War where the South wanted to retain there unpaid
employees (Slaves) and the North wanted to take advantage of this
cheap labor source (New Slavery). Gee! that is same thing they are
doing today. Moving jobs overseas to take advantage of cheap labor
sources in foreign countries. In addition, the Southern Plantation
owners were shipping, mainly Cotton and Tobacco, directly
overseas and Northern factions wanted their cut of these
actions. During the Civil War there were Northern Suppliers
to both the North and South who made fortunes on "Hedging their
Investments". What happened after the South Lost? Northern
factions moved in and took over the vanquished plantations and
many freed? slaves moved north and took low paying manufacturing
jobs. Oh! what a coincident! The argument between secession and
slavery as the cause for this war still continues.
Manifest Destiny was always a general notion rather than
a specific policy. The term combined a belief in expansionism
with other popular ideas of the era, including American
exceptionalism, Romantic nationalism, and a belief in the
natural superiority of people of English descent. While
many writers focus primarily upon American expansionism
when discussing Manifest Destiny, others see in the term
a broader expression of a belief in America's "mission"
in the world, which has meant different things to different
people over the years. (Although, Manifest Destiny was aimed
at Nationalism it was the beginning of it's eventual goal of
internationalism).
The belief in an American mission to promote and defend
democracy throughout the world (Internationalism), as
expounded by Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson, continues
to have an influence on today's American political ideology.

Gift of Life!
By L. Don Oliver
The storm clouds were building,
The heart was sinking low;
The rain came pouring down,
The angry winds began to blow;
Lightening flashing above my head,
The paint less walls wearing thin;
Then, you opened your loving arms,
And enclosed me there within;
You kissed my troubled brow,
Hugging me with all your might;
Tenderly, you sang songs of love,
All through that wakeful night;
When the new light had dawned,
Restful sleep was mine to see;
Mama, I will always love you,
For your precious gift to me;

What is the definition of Collective Salvation?

Collective salvation is a quasi-contract religious

Waiting for their coming doom;
I strolled the desert's heat,

Spring's Calling!

Spring is yearning nigh,
Clover is in it's bloom;
Searching for a four leaf,
Hoping to find one soon;
Crows lounging in a tree,
Above farmer Brown's field;
Waiting for him to sow,
So that they can yield;
Squirrels inching from the nest,
Scampering down an old oak tree;
Dining from their hidden stash,
Until the acorns have grown free;
Maple embryos fluttering in the breeze,
Attaching themselves to the ground;
Preparing to grow and flower,
In their natural coming around;
A rose bud upon it's stem,
Dew trickling off it's thorn,
Praying that it will flower,
At the approach of early morn;
Lovers, hand in hand,
Strolling through the park;
Oblivious to the World about,
Anticipating the coming dark;
