CROWLEY - A Memorial Service for Rev. John Herschell Patterson will be held at the Ebenezer Nazarene Church,1020 Ebenezer Road, on Saturday, February 9, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
Rev. John Herschell Patterson was born to Walter and Auga Patterson on August 22, 1914, in Independence County, Arkansas. His ‘baby sister’ Eunice came 12 years later. John met and later married Hilda Mae Reed on October 20, 1935 in Bethany, OK. To this union were born two daughters, Marolyn and Carolyn, five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
John got saved and felt the call to preach in a revival service at the Elmotte Church of the Nazarene, Los Angeles, California. He attended the Bethany Peniel College in Bethany, OK and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Theology. During the last two years of his college John pastored the Snowhill Community Church just south of Bethany, OK followed by 7 churches in Texas and 2 churches in Oklahoma.
During a 10 year break in pastoring, John worked for Texas Instruments as a machinist then moved to Ellis, Louisiana, to pastor the Ellis Church of the Nazarene for the next 27 years. During these years at Ellis, he was retired but continued to pastor until the closing of the Ellis Church. He then became the prayer pastor of the Ebenezer Church of the Nazarene until he no longer could continue at age 93.
John (whose name means ‘God’s grace and compassion’) moved to his heavenly home on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, at 3:00a.m. from his earthly home at Parkwood Healthcare, Bedford, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 59 years, Hilda.
His is survived by his two daughters, Marolyn (Dan) Rippe and Carolyn (Kenneth) Jones; his five grandchildren: D’Alva Messina, Chris (JoAnn) Rippe, Michelle Rippe, Jennifer (Jonathan) Loacker, and James (Jessica) Jones; and his seven great-grandchildren, Danny Rippe, Blake Rippe, Payton Rippe, Jonathon Loacker, Jordan Loacker, Elise Jones and Annette Jones.
