![]() Immaculate Conception Church in Washington, which predated the Civil War, burned to the ground Friday, Jan. 14. Parishioners said they smelled smoke during 6:30 a.m. Mass. Fire apparently erupted in the attic in the rear of the church about 9 a.m. The old dry, cypress lumber erupted into a ball of flame within minutes and firefighters had little chance to save the historic structure.
