BATON ROUGE – NPR’s “From the Top” program and the LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts invite young classical musicians – instrumental and vocal soloists and/or ensembles and composers – ages 8-18 to audition for national broadcasts of “From the Top.”

Auditions will take place by appointment only Saturday, April 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LSU School of Music Recital Hall, located in the New Music Building at the corner of Dalrymple Drive and Infirmary Road.

For the past decade, “From the Top” has been the preeminent showcase for America’s best young musicians. Through award-winning NPR and PBS programs, online media, a national tour of live events, and education programs, “From the Top” shares the stories and performances of pre-collegiate musicians with millions each week. Each program provides a compelling and entertaining window into the world of a diverse group of young people, who pursue life with passion, determination and joy.

“From the Top” is hosted by Christopher O’Riley, an international pianist and media personality. In the fall of 2009, the LSU College of Music & Dramatic Arts named O’Riley as its first Distinguished Visiting Artist, a title he will hold from 2010 through 2014. The college also established a three-year partnership with “From the Top” that will include live tapings of the popular NPR radio show throughout Louisiana, community programs to inspire the next generation of budding young artists, and national broadcast performance opportunities for Louisiana’s pre-collegiate musicians.

“From the Top” can be heard Tuesdays at 7 p.m. on KRVS 88.7 FM in Lafayette, Thursdays at 10 a.m. on WRKF 89.2 FM in Baton Rouge and Saturdays at 11 a.m. on KDAQ 89.9 FM in Shreveport. The “From the Top” PBS television series has also been broadcast on Louisiana Public Television.

“From the Top” also invites applications for its Jack Kent Cooke Young Artist Award. More information about this $10,000 scholarship opportunity is available at www.fromthetop.org.
