After reading the confession that was signed by Brandon Scott Lavergne was read in court prior to his sentencing at the Lafayette Parish Courthouse, I never will either.
In short, I left there Friday thinking 'man that was one tough girl.'
For a few minutes on that fateful May evening, Lavergne probably thought he may have met his match.
For those who haven't an opportunity so see the plea where Lavergne admitted to killing Mickey and, in a decade old case, Youngsville native Lisa Pate. For a short time that night our tough-looking serial killer was getting his a-- kicked by a girl half his size. And she didn't stop fighting until he realized that he, a much stornger man, couldn't handle her. So he took the coward's way out and killed her with a gun.
Well Brandon, if you had that much trouble with a 22-year-old, I'm kind of wondering how you will do against your new roomates at Angola. I've hear those guys can be pretty tough. And when they find out what you did - and I'm sure most already know - boy are they going to have some fun with you.
Even criminals have a code of honor in prison that that makes life miserable for rapists and child molesters. And assuredly Lavergne will get his.
Believe that.
Maybe he'll be safer in prison. Because it was probably a good thing the police found him before Mickey's little sister did.
I would also like to extend my condolences to the family of Lisa Pate, who almost seems as though she was an afterthought with all the attention that has been focused on Mickey these past few months.
If there is anyone out there who has a relative in Angola please get in touch with them and let them know what a sissy they have living amongst them. And I'll bet that his name is changed to Brandy Lavergne by next week at this time.
On a much lighter note, is the Lord making an effort to keep us from mowing our yards these days? It's been over two weeks now for me and it seems as though every chance I have to mow my yard is suddenly destroyed by a 4:15 p.m. thunderstorm.
I can recall being a young boy and doing everything to avoid mowing my father's yard. However, now days I can honestly say I kind of enjoy it.
For starters, you really don't have to think when you're doing yard work and my brain needs every break it can get. Yeah, I know my friends that I grew up with in Lafayette are laughing and saying "your brain has been on break for about 25 year's now Howie." However, nobody wants to be known as the 'crazy guy in the neighborhood who never mows his yard.' Just the 'crazy guy in the neighborhood' would be acceptable.
Speaking of crazy, I am literally sitting here counting down the days, hours, minutes and seconds until LSU kicks off their college football season - if you go to Dandy Don's LSU Recruiting Page on the web there is actually a New Year's Eve type of clock that is counting down the exact amount of minutes until North Texas comes calling - 15 days, 22 hours and three seconds at last count.
And as angry as I was at Tyrann Mathieu failing his third drug test, you got to admire the fact that last night he came out and made a declaration that he will not be playing football this season and will be concentrating on his recovery.
Say what you will about the blonde haired, hard hitting cornerback. The kid has a penchant for making game-changing plays. His blocked punt in the Oregon game last year which he picked up and ran in for a touchdown kind of set the tone for the first 13 games of the season. I choose to forget the last one.
It's funny how I was so relieved when the Saintts finally got Drew Brees' name on a contract only now I don't want to put him into a game during the preseason. The frontloaded contract, which I was happy to see a guy of Brees' character sign at the time, pays him $40 million this season alone.
Have you noticed how the Saints' coaching staff has been pulling Brees out of the first two preseason games after only one drive in each? We'd look pretty stupid for paying a man that much money if an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season.
Now Drew has taken every snap for the Saints since he signed in 2006 (with the execption of garbage time) so I want to think that he is a pretty durable quarterback. However, the pessistic side of me keeps saying that 'he's due.'
If nothing else it has given us to see how Chase Daniel has improved over the course of the past few years and I must say that his progress - save for one interception in last week's game has been very impressive.
I saw Drew looking a little upset when they pulled him last week. But seeing as how he made us wait for what seemed like an eternity well.......
