LAFAYETTE – The Crowley Gents, typically an up-tempo team, got a taste of their own medicine Thursday evening in their opening game of the Lafayette High Tip-Off Classic against Class 5-A Westgate.

The Tigers forced the issue with a staggering press defense and converted countless times in transition to hand the Gents a humbling 77-56 loss.

“They (Westgate) ran for four quarters,” said CHS coach Derrick Boone. “They got the ball out of the net quick and pushed the ball.

“We lacked a little in our transition defense and they were able to get a lot of easy baskets. We just got beat up and down the floor. ”

The Gents trailed by as many as 11 early, but they were able to cut the lead to 30-23 at the half.

The seven-point deficit was as close as the Gents would get.

Westgate picked up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and reeled off 30 points to increase the lead to 60-42 and all but seal the win.

“We were only seven points down after not really playing a good first half,” said Boone. “We knew we had to play smart in the third quarter and we scored 19 points... But they scored 30.

“Scoring 19 is pretty good for a quarter. It was our highest quarter total. Unfortunately, it was their’s also.”

Charles Onezine came off the bench in the fourth quarter and gave the Gents a much-needed spark with a pair of 3-pointers. But it wasn’t enough;  the Tigers outscored the Gents 17-14 in the final frame.

Damon Malbrough paced the Gents with 12 points. He was followed by Danny Malbrough (11), Onezine (10) and Chanz Moore (10).

John Davis added six points, Andre Mills scored five and Jessie Harmon finished with two.

Brittany Johnson and Jillian Boone led the Lady Dogs with 13 points each. Mallory Faul followed with five points, Madison Smith added four and Alexis St. Andre had three.
