Monday at around 4 a.m., Jimmy Hebert was sleeping in his studio apartment located on South State Street (across from Gulf Coast Bank). He heard glass break, which woke him up. Hebert, 62, thought someone was breaking into the front of his building along State Street.
He grabbed a weapon and went towards the front of the building in the dark. Walking down a long hall, he heard banging and got scared but continued walking.
Then he saw it. It was not a person.
“At first, I thought it was a big wolf or a large dog,” said Hebert. “It was a deer. I was glad to see it was a deer and not a person.”
A deer, somehow, traveled down State Street, probably got scared when a car passed and jumped into the glass door and shattered the front door window and came to a stop in his building.
“I tried to get it to go back out the door,” he said. “It jumped a six-foot long table, ran into a ladder and ran back out of the front door.”
Hebert said he opened the door and then saw the deer head south and then try to break the front glass door of the old Mouton barber shop, next to his building. It smashed the glass but could not get in. It continued to run on the sidewalk of State Street, he said
Kim Landry now owns the old Mouton barber shop. She did not know her door was broken until Monday around 5 p.m. She went to her shop and saw the glass broken. She called the Abbeville Police Department and filed a report.
According to the police call log, police officers found what looked to be deer hair on the broken glass door of Landry’s business. She had been in that location less than a year.
“The first thing I thought of is what would a deer be doing in the middle of Abbeville,” said Landry.
“Judge” Edwards of Abbeville, who is a wildlife expert in the parish, said he’s never heard of or seen one in Abbeville’s city limits.
