The murder case against Daniel Prince faces additional delay with the withdrawal of his attorney and appointment of a new one after Prince allegedly smuggled contraband into the Acadia Parish Jail.

Prince, charged with the January 2005 murders of Angela Matte and Jackie Campbell at their house in Branch, allegedly used an envelop from his then-attorney to take marijuana, rolling papers and pornography into the jail, where he has been awaiting trial for months.

He was charged by the state with the smuggling counts this week.

Public defender Burleigh Doga was Prince’s attorney at the time of the alleged incident.

He resigned soon after and Thomas Alonzo was appointed.

Doga is not a suspect in the contraband case. Who sent the materials to Prince is still under investigation.

Attorney correspondence is the only mail not checked by jail personnel.

A jury pool was assembled in July for Prince’s trial but sent home when an as yet undisclosed development cause a delay without date.

Judge Kristian Earles threatened attorney sanctions at the time, but changed his mind.

Since then, three closed hearings have been held in the case

Prince was arrested in January 2007 after allegedly telling a fellow inmate of the murders and his burning of the house in an attempt to conceal the homicides
