All-American basketball player, coach

PINEVILLE -- Services are pending for All-American basketball player and coach Janice Joseph-Richard. She died Dec. 1 at age 46 after a five-year battle with breast cancer.

Richard, a Peabody Magnet High School (Alexandria) graduate, spent the last three seasons at Louisiana College, directing the Lady Wildcats to a 24-3 record, the American Southwest Conference title and the school’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament last spring.

Richard had a 307-163 record in 16 seasons as a head coach at Xavier University in New Orleans, San Jose State and LC.

Richard was an NAIA first-team All-American at LC in 1985 and 1986, leading the Lady Wildcats to a 31-3 record, a No. 1 ranking in the polls and a third-place finish in the NAIA national tournament.

Richard’s first job as a head coach came in 1992 at Xavier. She compiled a 159-34 record in six seasons there, winning four Gulf Coast Athletic Championships and reaching the NAIA national tournament.

In 1999, Richard took over at San Jose State, an NCAA Division I program that had gone 30-107 in the five years before she arrived and returned it to respectability.
