Former ULM coach

MONROE – Services are pending for former director of athletics and men’s basketball coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe Benny Hollis. He died Saturday at age 71.

Hollis’ tenure dated to when the school was called Northeast Louisiana University.

During his tenure as athletics director, Hollis oversaw the school’s move to Division I-A football. In 2003, Hollis was inducted into the ULM Hall of Fame.

After he left Monroe in 1994, Hollis served as the director of athletics at the University of Tennessee at Martin before retiring.

Arrangements are under direction of Mulhearn.

Oil and gas pioneer

LAFAYETTE – Services for noted oil and gas man Rutledge Deas, Jr. will be Wednesday. He died March 13 at age 85.

Deas. s U.S. Navy aviation veteran of World War II, made his professional mark in Shreveport and Lafayette.

He made significant discoveries and extensions of fields in LaSalle, Ouachita, Lafource and Terrebonne Parishes.

His South Oak Production Co.’s activities earned him selection as a La. Oil & Gas Magazine pioneer.

He was first board chairman of the La. Independent Oil & Gas Assn.

Survivors include his wife Ginger and five children.

Arrangements are by Martin & Castille Downtown.

Retired priest

CHICAGO – Services will be Friday for retired priest Joseph Peplansky. He died Sunday at age 74.

A Claretan Missionary, he was campus chaplain and director of the Catholic Student Center at LSU from 1969-1976.

In later years he served at churches in Virginia, Missouri and Illinois.

Arrangements are by Elmwood Chapel.
