Former Jambalaya king

GONZALES -- Services for retired merchant and civic leaders Leon Geismar will be Saturday. He died March 16 at age 84.

Geismar an Army infantry veteran of World War II and the Korean War and held the Bronze Star.

He was owner of Progressive Stores, a retired Ascension Parish School Board member, a member of Gonzales Hall of Fame and a former Jambalaya Festival king.

Survivors include his wife, Mildred.

Arrangements are by Ascension.

Retired teacher, coach

SLAUGHTER -- Services will be Saturday for teacher and coach ‘Phil’ Speeg. He died March 15 at age 77.

Speeg, an Air Force veteran, was a former teacher, coach and assistant coach for the East Baton Rouge School Board.

He was an all-state football player on the 1950 Clinton High state championship team.
