MINDEN -- Services are Monday for newspapers owner David A. Specht, Sr. He died April 14 at age 65.

Specht owned Specht Newspapers Inc., which include papers in Minden and Bossier City.

He formed the corporation in 1983 after several years in the newspaper publishing business.

Survivors include his wife Cheryl and a son who is vice president of the company.

Former ULL coach

LAFAYETTE – Beryl Shipley, a former men's basketball coach at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette, has died. He was 84.

He died April 15.

Shipley was the college's most successful coach and over 16 seasons he led the college to 15 winning seasons and finished with a 293-126 record.

In the 1960s, the Ragin' Cajuns under Shipley won five Gulf State championships in six seasons and the 1964-65 NAIA District 27 Tournament Championship.

In the 1970-71 season, the Cajuns moved up to the NCAA level and advanced to the NCAA college tournament that same year.
