SHREVEPORT – Services for former ARKLA Gas executive Billy Nichols will be Tuesday. He died June 8 at age 85.
He retired as vice president of ARKLA’s Louisiana-Texas division after working in various engineering and managerial positions for the corporation in Shreveport and in Arkansas and Oklahoma. He was named a “Honorary Okie” for his work with Oklahoma’s industrial development commission.
He was founding president of the Louisiana Gas Assn. and a member of the board that established the Texas Excavation Safety System and for a period was chairman of its board. He was involved in a number of civic organizations and helped establish the Shreveport Metropolitan Concert Band.
Survivors include his wife Jean, a son, a daughter and several step-children.

LAFAYETTE – Services for former Judge George Ware, Sr. will be Wednesday. He died June 10 at age 81.
He was a judge for 20 years on the 15th Judicial District Court (Lafayette, Acadia and Vermilion Parishes) bench and was Rayne city prosecutor for 11 years. He was a former president of the state district judges association and after retirement was a substitute judge for the Third Circuit Court of Appeal.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, two sons and two daughters,

PLAQUEMINE – Services for East Baton Rouge City/Parish Chief Construction Engineer Jose Alvarez will be Wednesday. He died June 10 at age 62.
He was a civil engineer and a volunteer fireman
Survivors include his wife Connie, a son and a daughter.

Retired medical director
PROSPER, Texas -- Dr. Thomas Cocke, Sr., former medical resident director at Earl K. Long Medical Center in Baton Rouge, La., died June 6.
He was also former clinical director at the Medical Center and at the Greater Baton Rouge Kidney Center.
Survivors include his wife Joan, a son and two daughters.
GONZALES – Services for baker Carruth Jumonville will be Thursday. He died June 10 at age 71.
He was owner and operator of Jumonville’s baker for more than 50 years.
Survivors include his wife Patricia, two sons and a daughter.

Asst. police chief
OPELOUSAS – Services are pending for Assistant Police Chief Willie Smith, Sr. He died June 10 at age 60.
He was a 39-year veteran of the Opelousas Police Dept. and was also pastor of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter.

Retired fire chief
BASTROP – Services for retired fire chief W.L. “Nub” Martin will be Thursday. He died June 11 at age 84.
He was a Bastrop fireman for 23 years and recently received an award for his work with youth athletics in the city.
Survivors include his wife Katie and a son.

Retired port supervisor
ALGIERS – Services for former dredging superintendent Capt. Elmer McCoy will be Saturday. He died May 25 at age 82.
He was retired superintendent of dredging for the Port of New Orleans, one of the nation’s busiest ports.
Survivors include a son and a daughter.
