Engineer, decorated vet

BATON ROUGE – Services for engineer and decorated veteran Kenneth Brown will be Friday. He died Aug. 8 at age 68.

He retired from the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel, beginning as a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and ending with the Corps of Engineers. He held the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star and 22 Air Medals among other decorations. As deputy district engineer, Vicksburg he was responsible for the final design and construction of Red River Water Way.

His firm, BCG Engineering and Consulting, made substantial contributions to flood and hurricane protection in South Louisiana and he was a leader in the bid for coastal restoration.

Survivors include his wife Carole and three daughters.

Former juror, softball pitcher

DENHAM SPRINGS – Services for noted softball pitcher and former police juror J.L. Shilling will be Saturday. He died Aug. 7 at age 73.

He was a reknowned fast-pitch softball pitcher into his 40’s. He was a two-term Livingston Parish police juror and a former president of that body. He was on the Livingston Parish Animal Control Board and retired from LA. DOTD.

Survivors include his wife Cornelia, a son and a daughter.

Priest, diocesan official

LAFAYETTE – Services for priest and former diocesan official Father Donald Leger will be Friday.

He was a former pastor in Eunice, Kaplan, Evangeline, Petit Mamou and St. Bernard. During his years of service to the Lafayette Diocese he was assigned to positions as diocesan counselor, vicar, South Acadiana Deanery, Clergy Personnel Advisory Board and dean, Vermilion and Acadia Deanery.

Survivors include two brothers and three sisters.

Arrangements are by Pellerin.

Music educator

LAFAYETTE – Services for noted music educator Doris Bienvenu will be Saturday. She died Aug. 7 at age 85.

She was a teacher, music teacher and choral instructor at a number of schools, serving as adjudicator, administrator, clinician and guest choral director throughout Louisiana. She was a former president of the La. Retired Teachers Association and the Louisiana chapter of AARP. She was a member of the Louisiana Music Educators Music Hall of Fame.

Survivors include a son and two daughters.

Arrangements are by Delhomme.

ULL history prof

LAFAYETTE – Services for ULL History Professor Emeritus Dr. John Moore will be Thursday. He died Aug. 7 at age 75.

He was a three-time Fulbright Scholar who taught at several universities in China, Thailand and Taiwan and was chairman of the ULL History Department for a total of 16 years.

Survivors include a son and two daughters.
