Leesville matriarch

LEESVILLE – Services for community matriarch Gloria Leach Owen will be Monday. She died Aug. 25 at age 87.

She and her husband Chester operated The Style Center ladies ready-to-wear store for 42 years. She was chairman of the Leesville Women’s Commission and active in a number of civic organizations.

Survivors include a son and a daughter.

Arrangements are by Labby Memorial.

CPA, Roemer auditor

BATON ROUGE – Services for former public auditor Donald DeVille will be Tuesday. He died Aug. 25 at age 57.

He was a CPA and a former auditor with the Office of the Governor and a member of Gov. Buddy Roemer’s Blue Ribbon Committee on Budgetary Reform. He was active in a number of professional, civil and religious organizations and on the board of St. Joseph’s Academy.

Survivors include his wife, Michelle, a son and a daughter.

Banker, KFC owner

HAMMOND – Services for banker and former Kentucky Friend Chicken franchises owner Bobby Helms will be Tuesday. He died Aug. 24 at age 82.

He owner KFC franchises in Hammond, Amite and Ponchatoula for 38 years and was a director of Citizens National Bank.

Survivors include his wife Luddie, three sons and two step-sons.

Arrangements are by Harry McKneely & Son.

Long-time pediatrician

METAIRIE – Services for long-time pediatrician and medical administrator Dr. Carl Kemmerly, III will be Monday. He died Aug. 23 at age 81.

He practiced at the Brown-McHardy Clinic for 32 years and was former chairman of the board, CEO and medical director of the clinic. He formerly served as chairman of the pediatrics departments at Hotel Dieu Sister’s Hospital, Southern Baptist Hospital and East Jefferson General Hospital.

Survivors include his wife Margaret and eight children.

Arrangements are by Lakelawn.

Former math professor

LAFAYETTE – Services for former ULL math professor Dr. Harvey Pousson will be Wednesday. He died Aug. 23 at age 74.

Arrangements are by Fountain Memorial.

Former alderman, Guard officer

GONZALES – Services for former alderman and retired Lt. Col. Nolan Villar will be Tuesday. He died Aug. 25 at age 79.

He was a retired electrical contractor and owner of Louisiana Electric Co. He served one term as Gonzales alderman and retired after 32 years with the Louisiana National Guard.

Survivors include his wife Connie, a son, two daughters and two step-daughters.

Arrangements are by Ourso.

Petroleum engineer, GOP activist

LAFAYETTE – Services for petroleum engineer and Republican activist George Reneau will be Monday. He died Aug. 24 at age 93.

He was a pilot and flight commander with the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II and was president and director of Alco Oil and Gas Corp. until he retired. He was active in the Louisiana Republican Party from the years when its members were few and far between.

Survivors include two sons.

Former pitcher, pulpwood producer, businessman

MONROE – Services for pulpwood producer and former professional baseball player Bill Halley were Saturday. He died at age 81.

He was a pitcher for the Brooklyn Dodgers organization for five seasons before becoming one of the largest pulpwood producers in Union Parish.

He also owned Bonanza Steakhouses and Popeyes Fried Chicken franchises in four states and had 12 chicken-growing houses in conjunction with ConAgra.
