Police Chief Ronald Dies said his had enough of the apparent penchant for littering among some citizens and is instruction his officers to issue citations when they see junk happen.
“That goes for everything - bags, bottles, wrappers, cans - anything you thrown out of your car or truck or just dump beside the road, in ditches or gulleys or anywhere else,” Dies said.
The chief said his edict includes the ubiquitous cigarette butts.
“They say their biodegradable. Well guess what, so is nuclear waste, but we don’t dump it all over the place. It’s time our streets no longer be used as others’ ashtrays,” Dies said.
He said the city’s efforts to clean itself up, which resulted this year in a second place in the state Cleanest City Content, need to be adopted by litterbugs.
“We’re going to help their act responsibly” the chief said.
His resolution comes on the heels or expressions at recent City Council meetings by council members and the mayor that it’s time to take the environment back from the louts who dump everything from furniture to fruit wherever they find it convenient.
