The Eunice Police Department lost one of its new squad cars early Saturday when an 18-wheeler pulled in front of it on East Laurel.

According to records, a rig driven by Randall Trahan, 35, of Lake Charles pulled out of Amy Shopping Center into the path of the 2010 cruiser driven by Officer Ivory Lefleur.

Lefleur swerved off the road to the right in an attempt to avoid a collision, eventually striking the rear axle of the trailer.

The officer was bruised and banged up, but otherwise okay, according to Chief Ronald Dies. The unit was totaled.

Dies said State Police Troop I was asked to work the accident scene and report because a city officer was involved.

According to records, Trahan, driving a rig owned by a saltwater disposal firm, had visited several truck stops in the area Friday night and Saturday morning.

He was cited for failure to yield and having an expired driver’s license. Trahan was also booked on a probation and parole violation warrant from Lake Charles.

The nature of that charge was not available.
