Five families ––Berken, Bunt, Cramer, Husesers and Meyer –– will be honored at the Roberts Cove Germanfest this year. All these families came from the Lower Saxony area of Germany bordering the Netherlands.
The organizational meeting to honor the descendants of the families and collect family histories and recollections was held on May 26 at the Museum. The musuem co-curators, Josie Thevis and Dot Leger, are asking for information and pictures from the families to help them put together stories of their lives. These will be published in local newspapers for all to read. Please do this as soon as possible but no later than Friday, August 20.
Several display areas in the Museum will feature the following:
Candlesticks and cadelebarras: The musuem’s religious room will showcase candlesticks and candellabras. Included will bee First Holy Communion candles, given to communicants on their First Holy Communion day.
German sayings and old sewing machine cabinets: Another display room will include any article that has a German saying. Examples: A cup with “Mutter”, a sign with “Willkommen”, a heart with “Ich Liebe Dich”, and so on. In this room, we will also have a display of old sewing machine cabinets.
Museum workers will soon be taking down previous displays, so they are asking the public to lend these items to them as soon as possible, but at least by September 15.
“We are proud of our faithful workers and we thank the many hostesses who made our visitors welcome during Germanfest 2009. We are looking forward to more interesting exhibits this year,” says Thevis and Leger.
