At 8:30 p.m. Saturday, records indicate police received a call from a Viola Street woman saying her husband had been attacked by a robber.
According to police, Charles Fontenot, 57, allegedly attempted to steal several items from the premises.
The homeowner, investigating strange noises outside, witnessed the suspect fleeing towards a red vehicle parked at the roadway while carrying his property, according to police.
Police say the homeowner confronted the suspect, who produced a .22 caliber handgun.
The two struggled for control of the gun, and during the struggle,the suspect fell to the ground, according to police.
Police say the homeowner told his wife to call police, and he and his son detained the suspect, who attempted to flee, until police arrived.
The handgun was recovered at the scene.
Fontenot, of 461 Acadian Street, was charged with aggravated burglary, simple battery, aggravated assault with a firearm and criminal trespass.
Fontenot had been arrested Aug. 24 for solicitation for prostitution, DUI, open container and no seatbelt.
