An unrelated visit to house by his supervisors ended up in a Eunice police officer being charged with drug violations.

The officer was booked on a felony drug charge after narcotics detectives allegedly found a legend drug (Naproxen), suspected illegal potpourri and suspected drug paraphernalia in his residence at 631 South 2nd St.

Chief Ronald Dies, disappointed that an officer has been charged but saying no one, officers or otherwise, will be allowed to conduct alleged illegal activity.

Dies said that additional arrests may be pending as the investigation is ongoing.

He explained that supervisors went to Officer George Nicholas Bergeaux’s residence to meet with him for department business. During the meeting they smelled the scent of burned Marijuana coming from the residence.

The information was reported to Eunice Police Department Detectives and they obtained consent to search Bergeaux’s residence.

During the search the Detectives located a pill bottle with a prescription for Tramadol HCL/Acetamin for Nicholas Bergeaux. The pill bottle contained an oblong white pill inscribed with a N on one side and 500 on the other.

The pill was identified as Naprelan/ Naproxen 500 mg. The pill required a prescription to obtain and Officer Bergeaux did not have a prescription for the medication.

The detectives later allegedly located a “Monster” energy drink can fashioned into a smoking device containing burned residue.

They also allegedly located a wooden box containing three partially burned hand-rolled cigarettes containing suspected illegal potpourri, a bag labeled “Wicked” potpourri 10 grams, containing suspected illegal potpourri, a glass smoking device and a metal smoking device containing burned residue, a pair of burned hemostats, a screen, two cigarette lighters, a pack of “JOB” cigarette rolling papers and loose suspected illegal potpourri.

Bergeaux was later interviewed and allegedly confessed to smoking the illegal potpourri with the pipes and can and to smoking marijuana within the past few weeks.

Bergeaux also gave information regarding other prescription pills that he was obtaining from another suspect. Bergeaux, a former jailer and a former dispatcher, then resigned from the Eunice Police Department and was charged with Possession of a Legend Drug.

The remaining items located in his residence will be sent to the Acadiana Crime Lab for analysis and additional charges may be filed pending the results of the analysis.

This stuff is synthetic marijuana, commonly referee to as "spice". K2, Wicked, and Terra are some of the known labels. It's sold in hedge shops, gas stations, etc and labeled as incense. It is laced With synthetic cannabinoids often derived from China. It is popular amongst high school kids and college students. Just the same, it has surfaced among junior ranks of the military. To combat this trend, military drug tests have been modified to detect users; if caught, your discharged in the same fashion as if you had done the real stuff. The DEA is working to ban it. Don't kid yourself... He used it as an alternative for pot - exactly what this crap is sold for. Educate your kids on it because the health risks are bad.

I thought he woulda got caught sooner than this!! I agree with margaratmouton about the EPD being Jackasses but his hands arent quite as clean as you portray them to be. They didnt just bust him for nothing. Cops generally dont like busting each other(I would think so anyway). I think that they oughtta investigate a new hire a littli deeper, but thats just an idea. Amd the way to clean a town of drugs is to clean from the inside out.
