IOTA – The Iota Bulldogs’ best offense proved to be their defense Tuesday evening.

Iota’s press defense gave Gueydan trouble all night, forcing the Bears into countless turnovers  that turned into points in transition  and enabled the Dogs to cruise to dominating 63-29 victory.

“Our defense got us a lot of points tonight,” said IHS coach Stacy Bertrand, whose team improved to 3-2 with the victory. “We hustled, worked hard and got in front of the ball.

“Everybody is working for the team. If they mess up, someone else steps up. We don’t really have any individual players, they are all players and they play hard.

 “Bottom line: If we play good defense like we did tonight, we can play with anybody.”

It took a while for the Dogs to get going Tuesday, but once they did....

Gueydan jumped out to an early lead before the Dogs took a 10-6 lead at the end of the first quarter courtesy of a pair of 3-pointers from Luke Richard and Zack Hebert.

“Early in the game, we were missing layups,” said Bertrand. “We were running the offense and getting easy looks but we were missing them. It shouldn’t have been that close.”

The Dogs finally settled in as Richard canned another 3-pointer in the second quarter and Tristan Fontenot hit a pair of layups to lead Iota on a 18-5 run.

Gueydan’s Marcus Victoria caught fire in the third quarter and poured in nine of his 15 points in the frame to help get the Bears within 12 midway through the frame.

But  Iota answered  with eight points from Kyle Smith, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer, and the Dogs increased their lead to 43-22.

Gueydan’s 11-point outburst in the third quarter was as good as it would get for the Bears.

The Dogs turned up the defensive pressure again in the final frame and went on to outscore the Bears 20-7 in the final eight minutes.

Richard, Smith and Tristan Fontenot each scored in double figures for the Dogs. Richard had 18 points, Smith added 12 and Fontenot had 11.

Also scoring for the Dogs was Deandre Curtis (8), Garrett Reppond (7), Kade Hebert (4) and Zack Hebert (3).

“We have a very unselfish team,” said Bertrand. “We had a bunch of easy shots near the goal, but when the layup was taken away, we kicked it out and took the outside shot.”

Victoria led Gueydan with 15 points.

“Deandre played a great defensive game,” said Bertrand. “That No. 3 (Victoria) can play. He beat us last year so we had to have someone that could guard him and Deandre did a great job of holding him down.”

Quintan Martin added seven points for the Bears; Cade Sonnier had five and Gabe Richard finished with two.

Iota will return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 4 when they travel to Crowley to take on Northside Christian at 7 p.m.

NCS splits doubleheader with Church Point

CROWLEY – Mary Citizen, Shondrika Boast and Raven Alexander combined for 40 points to help lead the Church Point Lady Bears to an impressive 61-36 victory over Northside Christian Tuesday evening.

The Lady Bears took a 46-32 advantage after the third quarter and went on to outscore the Lady Warriors 15-4 in the final frame.

Citizen led the Lady Bears with 15 points while Boast and Alexander scored 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Also scoring for the Lady Bears were: Alexis Roy, six points; Bria Frank, four; Kanisha Dartez had three and Brittany Lewis, Fantasha Scott, Cessalie Carrier and Angel Red, two.

Northside was paced by Natalie Hayes’ 28-point performance.

Madeline Gatte followed with four points to go along with eight assists. Zoe Hanagriff added three points and Brooke Stanford rounded out the Lady Warriors scoring with one point.

In the boys’ game, Northside slipped away with a 49-39 victory over the Bears.

Kade Miller recorded a double-double for the Warriors with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Nathan Zeller followed with 11 points, Tracy Wilridge pitched in eight, Jacob Boudoin had five, Nick Martin had four and Ty Wilson scored one.

Late Scores

MIDLAND – The Midland Lady Rebels went on a 21-6 run in the third quarter and cruised past Iowa, 55-26, Monday evening.

The Lady Rebels were led by Katie Woods and Brooke Comeaux with 10 points each.

Melody Hebert added nine points, Nicole Kraut had six and Kristen Breaux  had five. Kallie Benoit and  Macy Hoffpauir each scored four points, Brittney Perridon, Elizabeth Istre and Bethany LeJeune each had two and Sonny Pete had one.
