BATON ROUGE – Grosse Tete's tiger will have a new home by year's end.

A district judge on Friday blocked state wildlife officials from renewing a permit for a truck stop to keep the caged tiger on its premises.

An injunction issued Friday by State District Judge R. Michael Caldwell bars the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries from issuing a new permit for the Tiger Truck Stop, on I-10 west of Baton Rogue, to keep the 10-year-old tiger once the current permit expires in December.

Caldwell declined to revoke the current permit, meaning the tiger can remain in the cage until Dec. 14.

Animal Legal Defense Fund attorney Matthew Liebman said the ALDF will work with the state to find a new home for the tiger, named Tony, at an animal sanctuary.
