The Bobcats put together a fourth quarter rally to get the come from behind win. That victory was Erath’s first in league play while the Wolves to 3-6 on the year.
“This one is tough to take in," said Rayne High head coach Curt Ware on the loss. "With the lead we had in the fourth quarter, this shouldn't happen.”
The Bobcats fought back with three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter to overcome the 14-point deficit and come away with the win.
The Wolves began the contest with a strong defense, forcing the Bobcats four and out in the opening drive.
Rayne’s offense came out gunning for the endzone, taking their very first possession 36 yards. Brody Bourque finished off the drive with a nine-yard touchdown run. Andrew Abshire split the uprights for the extra point and an early 7-0 Rayne lead.
Erath quickly answered as quarterback Mickey Seymour managed a drive converting two third and longs to give Quentin Blanchard the chance to capitalize with a two-yard touchdown run. Seymour’s kick was wide to keep Rayne ahead, 7-6.
After Rayne’s next possession ends in a punt, the Bobcats were faced with another third and long, but this time Seymour connected with wide receiver Joshua Pillette for a thirty-yard touchdown strike. The two-point conversion was stopped by Patrick Charles to leave Erath leading, 7-12.
It was then Rayne’s turn to answer with their offense as Bourque, Jayleen Williams and Aaron Chaisson each collected first downs to quickly bring the ball to the Erath 10-yard line. On third and goal Clarence Leger scored from three yards out to put the Wolves ahead again at 14-12.
The Wolf offense began the second half and wasted no time adding to the scoreboard. A run up the middle by Bourque spotted the ball near midfield then to the 23, where Williams then broke through within the one, allowing Leger to score on a quarterback keeper. The extra point was wide, leaving the score at 20-12 for the Wolves with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
On the next Erath drive, Danny Harmon came up with an interception, giving Leger and his squad good field position at the Erath 41. Leger scrambled down to the 19, then again to the seven before Brody Bourque finished the job with a two-yard touchdown run. Abshire’s kick is short for a 26-12 Rayne lead just inside the fourth quarter, the stanza that spelled disaster for the Wolves.
Erath began their next drive from the 35-yard line, and on first and second down got nothing. On third down, the QB sliped away from a possible sack and scrambled across midfield to the Rayne 30. On fourth and 10 from the 30, they bounce it to the outside to get inside the Rayne 10 for a first and goal. Cole Bourque finished the drive with a four-yard touchdown run to narrow the score 26-19.
The Wolves' next possession began on a good pace as they quickly got into Bobcat territory. But, the Erath defense stepped things up, forcing a turnover on downs at the 30. On second and long, Seymour found Joshua Pillette again, and this time he went the distance for a 70 yard touchdown reception to tie the ballgame at 26-26 with 5:19 remaining in the ballgame.
On what seemed to be a productive drive, a deflected pass found its way into the hands of Erath’s Wayne Scalisi, who returned to ball to the Rayne 43. Two penalties on the same play would result in a first and 10 as the ball was advanced all the way at the Rayne 12-yard line. On the first play, the pitch was mishandled Erath recovered at the 29. A questionable face mask penalty was called on a long third and 17. The next play, Seymour found Pillette for the go-ahead touchdown on a 13-yard pass play with 56 seconds remaining.
Offensively for the Wolves, Bourque was the leading rusher with 140 yards despite leaving the game in the fourth quarter due to an injury.
Leger was good for 31 yards through the air and 106 on the ground, while the offense collected 390 total yards on the night.
