Girl scouts, ages five to 14, gathered at the Evangeline Parish Courthouse Tuesday, March 3, to celebrate the 97th birthday of the Girl Scouts organization.
On March 12, 1912, Juliette Lowe gathered 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides. Margaret “Daisy Doots” Gordon, her niece and namesake, was the first registered member. The name of the organization was changed to Girl Scouts the following year.
From the original 18 girls, Girl Scouting has grown to 3.7 million members. Girl Scouts is the largest educational organization for girls in the world and has influenced more than 50 million girls, women and men who have belonged to it.
Although a small area, Ville Platte Service Unit 220 has over 100 girls on their membership roster. On Sunday, March 22, the girls will gather at the Ville Platte Civic Center to celebrate Thinking Day. This event gives girls an opportunity to set up booths, provide food and give out information on the culture of various countries. The public is invited to attend. The program is from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
