An elderly Eunice man apparently had enough of a pot-bellied pig running loose in the neighborhood, rooting around where it didn’t belong.

According to records, the man allegedly killed the pig over the weekend.

Records show a complaint was received Friday morning that a black pig was running loose in the Mamie Street area.

Responding units found no sign of the pig.

On Sunday morning, a different caller reported he believed his neighbor had killed his pig.

Follow-up found the pig and a suspect -- Joseph Loicy Johnson, 79, of 210 Mamie, who allegedly shot the pig with a pellet gun because it would not stay out of his garden.

Shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, the pig was returned to its owner for disposal.

Johnson is charged with cruelty to animals and discharging an airgun in the city limits.

Shooting the pet pig in the head is not the only way to 'protect his garden'. He could have talked to the neighbor who was taking care of it or called animal control, anything else would have been a better option. Next time my neighbors dog strays into my yard I guess I'll just go outside and shoot it in the head, problem solved. :(

I would like to see charges brought up on the owners of this potbelly pig. If Eunice has an ordinance against air guns within the city limits surly they would have a leash law as well. If this incident would have happened outside the city limits it would have been perfectly legal to shoot and kill this animal. It’s the disrespect of the animal’s owner that is being overlooked that infringes on his neighbors rights. His neighbor had every right to protect his garden.

He broke the law, he was punished. I don't see the problem. People can't just kill whatever walks into their yard because they don't like it.

Ok, I understand the cruelty complaint, as weird as it sounds but doesn't the owner of the pig also get a citation for his animal running loose unattended ? Should he not also be responsible for the damages caused by the unattended pig?

What a bunch of a** holes to arrest this old man for killing a pig that had been known was loose and causing a ruccus. Eunice is so stupid. And of course the animal guy was no where around. We had to dogs loose in my neighborhood a month ago bc the mexicans let them go when they leave and i went to city hall and got the number to the "dedicated" animal control person of eunice. A guy names "Red". Called the number a few times a day for a week and never got anything but voice mail. Let this old man go and get a life eunice police.
