Fr. Gary Schexnayder, pastor of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, will be the Celebrant of the funeral Mass. The family requests visiting hours Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to service time. A rosary will be recited Saturday at 6 p.m. by Sister Justina Baker at the funeral home.
Mrs. Cryer, affectionately referred to as Maw Maw by her beloved grandchildren and the many
NDHS students, was a native of Opelousas and was a member of the 1945 graduating class of the Academy of the Immaculate Conception. As a teen she was employed and rose to the rank of dept. manager at Abdalla’s in Opelousas. She had a successful career with Field Enterprises Educational Corp. where she received many awards for sales achievements. She later worked as dental assistant for Dr. John Taylor in Crowley. She spent many years as a teacher’s aide for the Acadia Parish
School Board. She cherished the last 17 years as a substitute teacher at Notre Dame High School.
Mary spent countless hours devoted to St. Ann Perpetual Adoration Chapel at St. Michael Church. She served the church in many capacities including lector, a Eucharistic minister, both in church and to the sick, and also served on their Parish Council. She was a member of the Notre Dame Athletic Board and was later honored as the Grand Marshal of the Notre Dame Homecoming Parade. The staff and students at NDHS honored Mary by dedicating the 2009 Notre Dame Annual in her honor.
She is survived by three children, Kathleen Cryer of Crowley, Casey H. Cryer, Jr. and his wife Delores of Crowley and Russell Cryer and his wife Charlotte of Lafayette; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is also survived by three siblings, Yola C. Huckaby, Bernice C. Walkoviak and Russell Carrier, all of Opelousas.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Casey H. Cryer Sr.; her parents, Clement and Yola Carrier; a brother, Clement Carrier and a sister, Francis C. Noel.
The family would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Coach Mark Jones, her colleague and dear friend, for his devotion and attention to our mom, Heart of Hospice, Crowley Rehabilitation Hospital, Southwind Nursing Home and to her many friends for offering up prayers for her recovery
and spiritual salvation.
Pall bearers will be her nephews Thomas Huckaby, David Huckaby, Bob Noel, Michael Noel, Gene Noel and Gene Prejean.
