WEST MONROE – Notre Dame’s doubles teams of Charlie Mayeux and Joe Schmid and Natalee Benson and Laura Schmid each reached the semifinals and helped lead the Pios and Lady Pios to third-place finishes at the Division III state tournament earlier this week.

“We had a really good season this year,” said Notre Dame coach John Trahan. “The boys were regional runnersup and the girls were the regional champs so I’m really proud of them.”

In the boys’ division, Loyola won the team title and Parkview was second.

On the girls’ side, Berwick edged out E.D. White for the team title.

“We got a tough draw in the boys division and we didn’t do quite as well as we had hoped to do,” said Trahan of his team’s performance at the state meet. “The girls, we thought we could contend for the state title if we got a good draw and we played well. And we did play well.”

In boys’ action, Notre Dame’s lone singles qualifier, Andrew Kondert, won his first match but he lost in the second round to Chris Anders of Parkview.

Mayeux and Schmid, one of three Notre Dame doubles teams competing in the event, coasted to a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Morris and Stokes of Rayville in the first-round and they handily defeated Millet and Millet of St. Charles in the quarterfinals, 6-0, 6-1.

However, the duo was upended in the semifinal round by No. 1 seed Spano and Winkler of Loyola, 6-4, 6-4.

Notre Dame’s Kyrick Pannell and Thomas Schumacher received a bye in first round and then dropped a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 decision in the second round.

Connor Benoit and Ben McNeely also received first-round byes, but they suffered the same fate as Pannell and Schumacher in the second round, losing to Duree and Horn of Loyola, 6-1, 6-0.

The Lady Pios were led by Benson and Schmid, who were the two-time defending regional champions. The team knocked off Frazier and Frazier of Caldwell in the opening round and they then took out Sanford and Sanford of Berwick to advance to the semifinals. Their bid for a doubles championship fell one round short when they were upended by E.D. White’s Badeau and Bernard, 6-0, 6-2.

Julie Reggie and Kaitlin Prevost dropped their first-round doubles matches as did Sam Spallino and Gabbie Romero.

In singles action, Cecile Benoit beat Janie Hable of Rayville in the first round, but she fell in her next match to No. 1 seed Basia Walters of West Feliciana .

Notre Dame’s other singles entrant, Hannah Veillon, dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to St. Charles’ Jessica Celestine in the first round.
