One dies when truck strikes wheelchair

RAYNE - Rayne Chief of Police Carroll Stelly announced details of a fatality that occurred in Rayne on Saturday October 22, 2011.

Around 7 p.m. Rayne Police were notified of a crash on East Jeff Davis near Curtis Drive. Officers responding discovered that the crash involved a 1991 Ford Ranger and a personal assistive mobility device (electric wheelchair). The driver of the truck was not injured and the occupant of the scooter Leland Jagneaux of Rayne was pronounced dead at American Legion Hospital.

Chief Stelly would like to remind the public that Louisiana law 32:300.2 states that these devices can be operate on roadways, sidewalks, and bicycle paths when the posted speed limits of 25 miles per hour or less.

No charges have been filed in the crash. The Rayne Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders assisted Rayne PD with the crash.
