Muffled cheers could be heard in School Board offices around the state Tuesday as word spread that State Supt. Paul Pastorek was heading to private industry.

Pastorek has banged heads with parish superintedents and teacher and employee representatives over his ideas for changing traditional education approaches in Louisiana.

Additionally, many parish systems felt he had undercut them with what some called a shell game regarding federal stimulus funding.

Pastorek announced Tueday he will become chief counsel for EADS North America, headed by former LSU Chancellor Sean O'Keefe.

Pastorek was appointed to the position in March 2007 by the Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).

He served on BESE from 1996-2004, including the last three years as president of the board.

On his departure from the board, Louisiana was noted as having the best-rated statewide accountability program in the United States.
