BALL -- A police cruiser collided with a bicycle left in the roadway early Sunday, then struck several trees and burned, killing the officer driving it.

State Police said Russell George, 47, of Boyce, who worked for the Ball Police Dept., was responding to call just before 3 a.m. when his unit hit the bike on U.S. Hwy. 165, which passes through the middle of the community in northeast Rapides Parish.

After colliding with the bicycle, Officer George lost control and exited the right side of the roadway before colliding with several trees.

After colliding with the trees, the Ford became engulfed in flames. George was unable to escape from the burning vehicle and was pronounced dead on the scene after other authorities arrived
