DELCAMBRE – It wasn’t their best effort of the season but, in the end, it was good enough.

The Notre Dame Lady Pios overcame a dismal shooting performance and a turnover riddled game to claim a 42-35 victory over North Vermilion Saturday in the finals of the Delcambre Tournament.

“We didn’t play our best by any stretch,” said Notre Dame coach Nolan Theriot, whose squad improved to 5-1 with the victory. “But it was a good victory. I’ll take 20 more ugly wins.”

Notre Dame’s defense limited North Vermilion to just 10 points in the first half, but missed shots and turnovers hindered the Lady Pios and their ability to run away with the game.

The Lady Pios committed nine first-half turnovers and took a 21-10 advantage at the break.

“We basically shut them down defensively and we only put up 21 points,” said Theriot of his team’s first-half offensive performance. “Turnovers hurt us. We basically dribbled the ball out of bounds and twice in the first half.

“And we just didn’t shoot it well. We made good passes, had wide open looks and then we bricked it.”

North Vermilion rallied in the third quarter and cut the lead to 31-24 before each team posted 11 points in the final frame.

Sam Lyons and Alex Miller led the Lady Pios with 10 points each while Madelyn LeJeune and Katherine Kirsch each scored seven. Hanna Eshay added four points and Liddy Rothermel and Gabbie Romero each had two.

“What we’re trying to get accomplished is to do the things that we were taught to do and to practice-play all at the same time,’’ said Theriot.

“I don’t want to sound like a downer because we did win the game, but I’m never satisfied with that. If we are going to be satisfied with our play on Saturday, then we’re not going to win many ballgames down the road.”

In boys’ action, the Pios dropped a 57-41 decision to Sam Houston in their final game of the Iowa Tournament.

The Pios, who fell to 1-5 with the loss, kept it close until the fourth quarter when they were outscored 14-5.

“We played three good quarters but then we just ran out of gas in the fourth,” said ND coach Donald Adams.

The Pios jumped out to a 13-9 advantage in the opening quarter, but fell behind 23-20 at the break.

Sam Houston increased the lead to 20-16 in the third quarter before running away with the game in the final stanza.

Tre Milstead paced the Pios with 19 points.

Tyler Simar added nine points, Jacob Leleux added five and John Duos had four. Brent Didier and Claiton Johnson rounded out the scoring with two points each.

Gents top Abbeville

LAFAYETTE – The Crowley Gents rebounded from back-to-back losses in the Lafayette High Tournament and slipped past Abbeville on Saturday, 54-42, to improve to 2-4 on the season.

The Gents rallied from a three-point deficit at the break (26-23) and outscored the Wildcats 31-16 in the second half.

Danny Malbrough and Charles Onezine led the Gents with 17 and 10 points, respectively.

Marcus Williams followed with eight points, Damon Malbrough added six, Chanz Moore had five and Jessie Harmon had four. Jeremy Thomas and Calvin Robinson each had two.

Midland Rebels, Lady

Rebels victorious

BELL CITY – Jake Gautreaux connected on three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 21 points on Saturday to lead the Midland Rebels to a 60-43 victory over Bell City.

Darren Arceneaux and Alan Vondenstein also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Also contributing in the victory were Randy Primeaux (8 points), Taatum Rubin (4), Dylan Boudreaux (2) and Nick Primeaux (2).

In girls’ action, the Lady Rebels were also victorious on Saturday with a 36-25 victory over Johnson Bayou.

The Lady Rebels took a commanding 25-6 lead at the intermission and fended off a late rally to grab the victory.

Johnson Bayou outscored the Lady Rebels 15-7 in the fourth quarter.

Nicole Kraut paced the Lady Rebels with eight points and Melody Hebert pitched in six. Elizabeth Istre followed with five points, Brooke Comeaux, Bethany LeJeune and Macy Hoffpauir each had four, Kristen Breaux had three and Kalli Benoit finished with two.

Lady Warriors

get first victory

HACKBERRY – The Northside Christian Lady Warriors recorded their first victory of the 2012-13 season Saturday, defeating South Cameron, 42-34, in the Hackberry Tournament.

Madisyn Clement led the team with 14 points while Zoie Hanagriff pitched in eight. Kathryn Zaunbrecher and Brooke Stanford each had six points, Cydni Crozier scored five and Madeline Gatte finished with three points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
