And the reasons vary for each.
Crowley High, Iota and Church Point are all fighting for a spot in the playoffs and victories are a must.
Notre Dame and Rayne, meanwhile, are postseason locks and both are battling to maintain or improve their seeding status.
All-in-all, victories are important for all involved.
In Crowley’s case, the Gents took a big step forward in the playoff picture with a 55-12 victory over South Beauregard last week. However, they must still win at least two of their final three games to have any chance at the playoffs.
Iota now finds itself in a must-win situation the final three weeks after a heartbreaking loss to Oakdale and Church Point is hitting possibly its roughest stretch of the season with games against Rayne, Livonia and Eunice remaining.
Notre Dame can pretty much lock up the top seed in Class 3A with three straight victories while Rayne will probably assure itself a top 4 seed by winning out.
And while we’re on the topic of winning...
Kye Cantey took top honors in the Crowley Post-Signal’s weekly football contest by missing just two games. He also made his way back to the top of the overall standings where he has 30 losses and is tied for the lead with Doug and Easton LaCombe.
Andrew Sarver was the runnerup, edging out Don Kernan, Elton Bourque and Jeff Bourgeois by virtue of the tiebreaker.
I dropped five games on the week and now have 34 losses on the year. That puts me four games behind overall leaders.
Now on to this week’s picks:
On the local prep scene I’m taking...
Crowley over Jennings – The Gents last week finally got the big night out of their offense that they had been looking for. Consistency was the key and will continue to be if they hope to make a playoff run.
Notre Dame over Westlake – The Pios were put to the test last week by Iowa, but as usual, they passed with flying colors. I look for much of the same this week.
Rayne over Church Point – This is one of those rivalry games that could go either way. It’s the Bears’ dominating defense against the Wolves’ high-powered offense. Who wins, I have no clue. Just going with the home team here. But I do wish I could be there in person to witness it.
Iota over Pine Prairie – The Dogs are backed into a corner now with last week’s loss. I look for them to come out and score early and often in this one. Dogs win big.
In other prep action I’m taking Carencro over Acadiana, St. Thomas More over Breaux Bridge, St. Charles over Brusly, Jewel Sumner over Albany, Loranger over Independence, Patterson over Jeanerette, Ville Platte over Bunkie, Oakdale over Mamou, West St. Mary over Delcambre and University over Dunham.
On to the college ranks, I’m going to go ahead and jump back on the LSU bandwagon, for one more week at least. The Tigers looked impressive at home against South Carolina and although they are on the road this week, I think it is a very winnable game. I mean, the Aggies nearly blew it against La. Tech last week.
In other games, I’m taking Arizona over Washington, Stanford over Cal, Florida State over Miami, Florida over South Carolina and Clemson over Virginia Tech.
