The Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest is off and running and if last week’s results are any indication, the race to determine Acadia Parish’s best prognosticator will go down to the final week.

Easton LaCombe, thanks to a tie-breaker pick, was last week’s winner and shares the overall lead with Elton Bourque. Both had only three misses.

The remainder of the field averaged five to six losses, meaning there is plenty of drama left for the remainder of the year.

Me? I was among the middle of the pack with six losses.

As I said in last week’s column, I will pick LSU from here on out, except when they play at Alabama .

Oddly enough I only caught flack from a few people, including our editor, Howie Dennis, who is like Dandy Don and thinks the Tigers can beat everyone, including the entire field in the NFL.

By the way, I left LSU off of this week’s picks. I mean, c’mon, their game is against Northwestern State !

But enough with that, it’s time to get onto this week’s contest, which I have an idea will be rough on everyone.

High School Picks

Breaux Bridge over Notre Dame – This should be a good one. Notre Dame had an impressive showing last week against Southwood. However, Breaux Bridge is a much bigger beast than the Cowboys. The Tigers have been impressive on both sides of the ball the last two weeks, holding Acadiana to just seven points in the jamboree and then scoring 35 against a very solid Westgate defense in the season opener.

Crowley over Comeaux – This should be another good one. It will be interesting to see how Crowley responds after having their season opener at Patterson canceled last week. But that time off allowed a few bumps and bruises to heal and if the Gents can get the first-game jitters out of the way early, I think they win this one. It will also be great to see former Crowley High coach Kevin Magee back in the Valley, even if it is on the opposing sideline.

Church Point over Kaplan – Kaplan is coming off a 36-14 victory over Jeanerette last week and did most of their damage on the ground. Getting that ground attack going again this week could be tough though. Church Point has snuffed out Abbeville (jamboree) and Beau Chene’s ground game in the last two weeks while pitching two shutouts.

Rayne over Welsh – Rayne will be hobbled a bit this week with the loss of running back Brody Bourque, who suffered an injury in the opener. However, the Wolves should still have enough firepower to get through this one.

Iota over St. Edmund – Iota has struggled the last two weeks, but I am going with the Bulldogs one more time. If they can clean up the mistakes, this should be a very winnable game.

West St. Mary over Northwest – This one is a toss up. Both had blowout victories over some pretty bad teams last week. I flipped a coin.

Catholic-NI over Erath – I’m going with Catholic High just because they played Teurlings to a close one (14-13) last week. Plus I saw Erath in the jamboree and was less than impressed.

Avoyelles over Oakdale – Oakdale did play Many tough last week, but Avoyelles put up 66 points against Pointe Coupee Central. That’s enough for me.

St. Thomas More over Central – As much as it pains me, I have to go with the Cougars. After watching them scrimmage and then seeing what they did to Sulphur (44-0) last week, these guys are the real deal.

St. Martinville over Franklin – Neither team is exceptionally good so I’m going with the higher classification in this one.

West Monroe over Calvary – West Monroe dropped a 30-23 decision to Byrd last week. Although Calvary does look to be a formidable opponent, I wouldn’t bet the house on the Rebels being upset again.

Lake Arthur over Delcambre – Don’t know much about this one, but I do know Lake Arthur averages about 238 on both lines and they have a running back that has drawn some Division I attention.

College Picks

Michigan over Notre Dame – Everyone just knew I was going to go with my Wolverines and they are right. I was actually going to take Notre Dame until I watched them last week. They weren’t very impressive and now they are changing quarterbacks.

UL-Lafayette over Kent State - Since you are not allowed to change the channel, even during commercials or halftime, when watching a LSU game at Howie’s house, I was only able to watch ULL for a brief time last week. However, everything I’ve read about their play against Oklahoma State leads me to believe the Cajuns are far better than they were a year ago. I don’t see the Cajuns giving up 61 points to Kent State .

South Carolina over Georgia – Big SEC battle here. Should be a close one but I’m going with the “old ball coach” in this one.

Arizona State over Missouri - Another game that should be close. Odds makers have the Sun Devils a 7 1/2 favorite. Pac 12 gets this one.

Mississippi State over Auburn – Mississippi State is pretty darn good and LSU fans should take note. The Bulldogs crushed Memphis on both sides of the ball last week. Auburn will need to have a much better showing than they had last week to even stay in this one.

Tulsa over Tulane – Another one of those coin flips.
