We are just one week into the 2011 prep football playoffs and there have already been more bracket busters than we normally have during the course of the five-week postseason.

Of all five classes, 15 lower seeds pulled off upsets in the opening round, including the most shocking of them – No. 32-seed Central of Baton Rouge’s upset of No. 1 St. Paul in Class 5A. The second highest seed in all classes was also in 5A with No. 4 Dutchtown falling to Ponchatoula.

Rayne, the No. 26 seed, provided the biggest upset in 3A by upending district rival and No. 7 seed Church Point while No. 8 Menard fell to No. 25 Newman in 2A.

Those upsets also wreaked havoc on the Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest where the majority of the entries ended up with eight or more losses.

Keith Guillotte was not affected as much though: he claimed top honors after missing just five games. He also moved into tie for the overall lead with Kye Cantey, each with 56 losses. Summar Leleux took runnerup honors by virtue of the tiebreaker with six losses.

I was near the bottom of the pack, missing nine games.

Now, with the upset bug running rampant, let’s see who you are going to take this week.

My picks:

High School

Notre Dame over Parkview – Classic rivalry that could go either way. Both are evenly matched and well coached. Turnovers will be the key and the Pios are pretty good at creating takeaways.

Bossier over Rayne – When I saw Rayne prior to their first game against Church Point, I was amazed with the athletes they had on the field. The breaks just didn’t go their way that night. Last week they did. This week, not so sure lightning will strike twice.

Ouachita over Carencro – You never know, it could happen. Second-round games have been a problem for Brent Indest in the past.

Patterson over St. Charles – Patterson hasn’t played anyone worth a darn this year. Friday, we all find out how good they really are.

Farmerville over Marksville – I personally don’t think either is a championship contender. Giving Farmerville the edge at home.

Jennings over Eunice – Hard to beat a team twice in the same year, especially a good one.

Amite over Westlake – Westlake had their dramatic victory last week. Amite will be in the Dome.

Teurlings over O.P. Walker – This just might be Sonny Charpentier’s year.

Acadiana over Rummel – Rams are putting up mad points. Don’t see them bowing out at home.

Kentwood over Westminster – Both teams are scoring in bunches. It’s a tossup.

Parkway over Mandeville – Parkway played the tougher schedule and is nearly perfect at home.

St. Martin’s over Block – No. 5 seed versus No. 12. You tell me.

Loreauville over Episcopal – Lots of offense in this one. Could be a barn burner.

West St. John over St. John – District rematch. West St. John won the first meeting by 16.

Central Catholic over Elton – I flipped a coin.

Livonia over McMain – Livonia should make it past this round.

College

Michigan over Nebraska – Michigan ’s play has been spotty at best the last few week’s but I’m going with my team this week.

Ohio State over Penn State – Got to give the Buckeyes the edge at the Horseshoe.

LSU over Ole Miss – I was thinking this might be a trap game for the Tigers, but after seeing La. Tech beat the Rebels last week, LSU will win this one easily.

Texas over Kansas State – This one could go either way.
