It’s that time of year that we’ve all been waiting for.

Yes, it's football season!

And that means it’s time for the Crowley Post-Signal Football Contest, a chance for you football gurus to match wits for 14 weeks to see who is the best prognosticator in the surrounding area.

Last year, the Top Dog was Kye Cantey, who unseated Don Kernan after back-to-back winning seasons.

This year, it’s up for grabs again.

So what better way to start the season off than with my expert picks? (That seriously was a joke by the way)

Notre Dame over Southwood – The Pios may not be in that mid-season form just yet, but in this case, it really doesn’t matter. Southwood should be a little better than they were in 2011 but this one, like last year, should be a rout.

Crowley over Patterson – Although the Gents’ defense left a lot to be desired last week, their offense was on fire. If the Gents can just get a few stops, I think they can pull off the upset.

Rayne over St. Edmund – The Wolves are, without a doubt, the real deal this year. That wing-t offense will be tough to contain. They may give up a few points, but they will score in bunches, especially early on.

Church Point over Beau Chene – I was impressed with what I saw out of the Bears in the jamboree. If they can limit Beau Chene’s Jamal Chevis, they have a good shot in this one.

Iota over Vinton – This one’s a toss up. Both teams are young, but Vinton only returns three starters off a team that defeated the Bulldogs 12-6 last year.

Iowa over Abbeville – Abbeville does return a number of starters from a year ago, but the 2011 version of the Wildcats went 1-9. Returners or not, I’m sticking with Iowa.

Erath over Delcambre – Delcambre is very young and inexperienced this year. Although they do return their starting quarterback and their leading receiver from 2011, Erath should prove to be the better team.

Vermilion Catholic over North Vermilion – VC lost heavily to graduation last year, but they do return a few starters, including one of the state’s most prolific running backs in Jacoby Davis. The kid had a pair of touchdowns and rushed for 121 yards on 12 carries in the jamboree. I’m taking the Eagles by two touchdowns.

Breaux Bridge over Westgate – Breaux Bridge is still very athletic despite losing a number of key players to graduation. They proved it in the jamboree with a first-year starter at quarterback throwing for 266 yards.

Jennings over Cecilia – I watched both teams play in the jamboree. Jennings was somewhat impressive. Cecilia, not so much.

Marksville over Bunkie – Bunkie is down this year. This one won’t even be close.

LSU over North Texas – Couldn’t be more of a cupcake opener. Tigers win big.

ULL over Lamar – How can you not go with the Cajuns?

Michigan over Alabama – Like you couldn’t see this one coming. I think we will surprise a few people Saturday evening.

Michigan State over Boise State – As much as I hate to pick ‘little brother’, Boise isn’t on that level anymore.

Auburn over Clemson – This one could go either way. Oddsmakers have Clemson as a 3 1/2 point favorite, but I like the SEC in this one.

South Carolina over Vanderbilt –Another toss up here. I flipped a coin.

Notre Dame over Navy – The Irish are back! Not really, but they can beat Navy.

Kent State over Towson – Vegas has Kent State at 3 1/2 point favorites. Works for me.

Rutgers over Tulane – Only way the Green Wave gets out of this without a loss is if Isaac causes the game to be canceled.

*Any games that get canceled due to Hurricane Isaac will be omitted from the contest.
