“It was a big win for us tonight,” noted Rayne High head coach Curt Ware on Friday’s win.
“We played well all around,” Ware continued. “We moved the ball when we had to and made key stops when we needed them. Our guys are really doing well at the point in the season when we need it.”
The Wolves set the tone offensively by getting a good return on the opening kick of the ball game. In two plays, the Rayne High followed through when Trent Duhon hit the middle 57 yards for the first score of the game. Ty Delahoussaye added the PAT for a quick 7-0 Rayne lead.
The Rayne defense followed suit forcing the Wildcats to a three and out punt putting the ball back in the Wolves’ hands at the 48. But, Rayne’s next drive stalled in Wildcat territory at the 32, placing the Wolf defense back on the field.
On the first play, the Rayne d-line, led by Billy Marcantel and Dylan Soileaux, swarmed the quarterback for a 10-yard loss. Ben Todd recovered on the next play getting it to his tight end, Brandon Armand, who crossed into Rayne territory at the 44. Another first down placed the Wildcats on the 23, but the Wolves manage to keep them out of the red zone forcing a turnover on downs at the 26.
The Wolves took some time off the clock on their next possession ending the first quarter facing a third and 10 at the Livonia 43. Jalen Williams broke for a big first down to the 27, then carried a couple Livonia defenders past the chains for another first down at the 11. But on fourth and 2, the Wildcats crowded the line and stuffed the Wolves, forcing a turnover on downs at the 3. From there, the Wildcat offense went to work eating up over nine minutes of the clock until QB Kerry Savoy capped the drive with a 3-yard TD run. The PAT was blocked leaving the Wolves with a slim 7-6 lead.
On the ensuing kick-off, Javon Cormier fielded the ball and make a few defenders miss, sending him off to the races going 90 yards for the kick-off return touching the endzone. Delahoussaye’s PAT was good for a 14-6 Rayne lead with two minutes remaining in the first half of play.
The Wildcats were making their way towards the goal line at the end of the second quarter until Wolf defensive back Quinn Guidry read the QB and jumped in front of the pass for an interception, ending the Wildcat threat and securing Rayne’s 14-6 lead at the halftime break.
The Wildcats wasted no time in the second half getting on the board. After taking the ball at the 20, they completed a big gain into Rayne territory and quickly got inside the 10. On first and goal at the 5, QB Kerry Savoy barreled his way into the end zone for his second score of the night. The two-point conversion attempt was successful, squaring the game at 14-all.
The Wolves came out of the locker room with some firepower of their own taking the ball 68 yards in four plays when Wolf quarterback Clarence Leger connected with Dannie Harmon for a 38-yard touchdown strike. The PAT was good for a 21-14 Rayne lead.
Livonia had little problem moving the ball on their next drive as they quickly got into Rayne territory once again. This time however, Dylan Soileaux forced a Livonia fumble in the backfield, allowing Grant Abshire to recover the ball for a Rayne possession at their own 23. But, the Wolves failed to capitalize on the turnover and would give the ball back to the Wildcats at their own 37.
Another quick hit to a receiver gets Livonia inside the Rayne red zone. After a penalty on first down, Wildcat running back Russell Farris found an open field and raced 25 yards for the touchdown. The 2-point conversion failed leaving Rayne with a slight 21-20 lead.
The Wolves found success through the air once again on their next drive when Leger found Tyler Lejeune for a big 41-yard completion into Wildcat territory ending the third quarter. Leger’s next pass split defenders and fell into the hands of Jalen Williams for a 17-yard touchdown catch. The PAT was blocked leaving Rayne with a 27-20 lead.
An illegal procedure call on the kick-off gave the Wildcats good field position and they knew what to do with it. Savoy found his tight end crossing the defense for a big third down conversion to the Rayne 45. After moving the chains one more time, Rayne corner Cody Manuel snatched a Wildcat pass and returned it to the 39 for another drive.
The Wolves mixed it up on offense again, using both the ground game and air attack. On a move around the defense, Javon Cormier got into the end zone for the second time of the night, turning the corner for a 13 yard Rayne touchdown run. Another blocked PAT left Rayne ahead 33-20.
The Wildcats began an air raid on the Wolves, completing 7 passes for 80 yards and another score when Kerry Savoy found Darrius Hammond. Dannie Harmon blocked the PAT giving the Wolves a 7-point 33-26 lead with under a minute to play.
The Wildcat’s desperation onside kick attempt failed, securing the 33-26 district opener win for the Rayne Wolves.
Brice Meche led the way for the Rayne defense with 15 tackles, followed by Andrew Broussard (11), Cody Manuel (9) and Billy Marcantel (11).
The Wolves were led on offense by Jalen Williams who carried the load for 108 yards on 25 touches. Trent Duhon added 86 rushing yards.
Clarence Leger was 4-for-5 passing with 113 yards and 2 Wolf touchdowns by receivers Dannie Harmon, Tyler LeJeune and Jalen Williams.
