CROWLEY – Devin Redlich, who a year ago faced the possibility of up to 25 years in prison for cutting two men in a bar room scuffle, took a deal in December and now faces a maximum of five years.

Redlich withdrew his not guilty plea to aggravated battery and pleaded guilty to an amended charge of second-degree battery.

His sentencing was delayed by Judge John Trahan pending a pre-sentence investigation.

The maximum under Louisiana law for the second-degree charge is five years, with or without hard labor, and $2,000, or both.

Second-degree battery is defined as committing a battery where intentional serious bodily injury is inflicted, including injury which features unconsciousness, extreme pain, disfigurement, loss or impairment or substantial risk of death.

A second count was dismissed at the state’s request as part of the plea bargain, according to court records.

Redlich on Nov. 4, 2010 stabbed or slashed two men in a tavern near Basile.

He was initially charged with attempted second-degree murder, which carries a maximum 25-year sentence.

The charge was later amended to aggravated battery - battery using a dangerous weapon which has a 10-year maximum.

While Devin Redlich awaits his sentence, his brother Darren Redlich awaits the next step in criminal case against him.

He is charged with malfeasance in office in relation to the same Nov. 4, 2010 incident.

He allegedly intentionally refused or failed to perform a duty lawfully required of him as an Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office officer, according to court records.

Darren Redlich, formally charged in March 2010, pleaded not guilty in July and nothing of record has transpired since in his case.

Meanwhile, Darren, Devin and Amanda Fontenot have sued several men who they alleged initiated and instigated the violence of Nov. 4, 2010.

Darren and Fontenot sued in August 2011; Devin filed on Nov. 7, 2010.

The defendents claim prescription expired before Devin filed and a hearing is scheduled Jan. 17 in Judge Trahan’s court on their motion to dismiss Devlin’s suit.

The suits by Darren and Fontenot were consolidated into one and a hearing is scheduled Jan. 23 on a motion seeking to compel Fontenot to answer questions posed to her by the defense as part of the pre-trial process.
