Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 11th, 2012 at an 11:00 AM mass of Christian Burial in Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Mire Louisiana for Ruth Eleanor Phillips Prejean, 93, who died peacefully on Friday, December 7th, 2012 at her residence in Mire surrounded by her family.

Interment will be in Mire Cemetery.

Father Michael J. Arnaud will be the celebrant of the mass. The lectors and gift bearers will be her grandchildren Lacy Prejean, Sarah Hooks, John Wayne “Jake” Prejean Jr., Ashley Delahoussaye, Mary Elizabeth Gossen, and Jonathan Broussard. Altar servers will be great-grandchildren Christopher, Joshua, and Benjamin Meaux. Naomi Broussard will provide music for the services and songs will include “How Great Thou Art”, “Amazing Grace”, “Old Rugged Cross”, “Hail Mary”, “Tell the People”, and “I Will Never Forget You.”

Her memory is cherished by her family, including; three daughters, Delores Meaux married to Clayton Sr., Marianne Prejean, and Elvie Delahoussaye married to Brian; three sons, Patrick Prejean Jr. married to Betty, Kenneth Prejean married to Debbie, and John Wayne Prejean Sr. married to Becky; 20 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

She is also survived by her siblings including: Norma Casford married to Ken of Whittier California, Earl Phillips of Beaver Crossing Nebraska, Curtis Phillips of Beaver Crossing Nebraska, Alan Phillips married to Donna of Olsburg Kansas and sister-in-law Eleanor Phillips of Holton Kansas. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kenneth and Ramona Norton Phillips, her sister Mary Martha Phillips, her brother Harlan Phillips, her sister-in-law Gladys Phillips, her son-in-law Darrell Broussard, her spouse Patrick Ashton Prejean Sr., and her in-laws Elvie and Leo Prejean.

Ruth Phillips Prejean was born on November 6th, 1919 in Manhattan Kansas. She was the second of seven children. Her family lived north of Manhattan on the Pottawatomie County side of the Big Blue River, just across the river from Stockdale Kansas. She attended grade school at District 108 which was near her home. She graduated from Stockdale High School in 1937 at the age of 17. She entered her nurses training at St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from St. Luke’s on February 21st, 1941. After graduation she worked as a Public Health nurse and at St. Luke’s Hospital as a night supervisor as she was too young to join the Army. When she came of age she joined the Army as a 2nd Lieutenant and was stationed at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas in Fort Smith Arkansas. She assisted in opening up the hospital at Camp Chaffee where injured or ill soldiers from WWII were hospitalized. After settling in the Acadiana area, she went to work for Dr. Kaliste Saloom, Saint Anne’s Infirmary, Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, the Lafayette Sanitarium, and Lafayette General Hospital where she retired in November of 1984. Her contribution to healthcare was in the field of obstetrics/gynecology and labor and delivery. Ruth lived her career of nursing as she truly loved caring for others. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Ms. Prejean was a lifetime member of the Catholic Daughters of Mire, Ladies Altar Society of Mire, and the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in Mire where she sang in the choir for numerous years. She also enjoyed reading and embroidering. Ruth loved her family and truly enjoyed being a servant to the Lord. She ministered to all she met. She will leave an unending legacy of love, kindness, service, and hope to all she met and mentored on her journey.

Pallbearers will be Patrick Ashton Prejean, Jr., Kenneth Prejean, John Wayne Prejean Sr., Clayton Meaux Jr., Scott Broussard, Jason Delahoussaye, and Nicholas Ashton Lee Prejean. Honorary pallbearers will be Clayton Meaux Sr., Brian Delahoussaye, and her grandsons Matthew Meaux, Edward Meaux, Ian Prejean, Jonathan Broussard, Jamie Broussard, Ben Prejean, Kenneth Prejean Jr., and John Wayne “Jake” Prejean Jr.

A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM at the Duhon Funeral Home in Rayne Louisiana on Monday, December 10th.

The family requests that visitation be observed on Monday, December 10th from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and will continue on Tuesday, December 11th from 8:00 AM until time of services.
