All across Acadia Parish, schools have been reminding their students and parents that a new school year is almost here.
CROWLEY - It’s almost that time again and signs that a new school year is almost upon us have been evident for some time now.

Schools have already posted “welcome back” messages on their marquees and the seasonal sections of stores have been filled with back to school items for weeks.

And while back to school is usually a time students dread, it is usually the time school administrators look forward to most.

“I’m looking forward to another great year,” said Morse Elementary School Principal Linda Wilkerson. “But, I’m always excited with the start of a new year.”

The 2010-11 school year has already begun for some school and students in the parish, but most will not see the beginning until Friday, Aug. 13, 2010 with a few not even fully beginning until Monday.

“We have a great school with great parents, great faculty, great staff and great kids,” said Wilkerson. “We hope to be as successful as we have in the past this year.”

Principals across the parish are gearing up for another year, many of which share in Wilkerson’s excitement.

“We’re really excited,” said Notre Dame High School Principal Cindy Istre. “Our first group reported [Wednesday] and we have a large freshman class.”

Notre Dame has a lot to be excited about, this year they have teamed up with UL-Lafayette to allow students the opportunity for dual enrollment where students will be able to earn several college credits.

“We’ve done this before with a community college, but this is going to be an added advantage to our students,” she said. “They will have [ULL] student IDs so they can go to the games and use the library on campus. So, I’m really excited about that as well.”

Notre Dame students will have the opportunity through the program to earn credits in chemistry, American history, English and advanced math.

So as students begin their countdowns to their next day off, Sept. 6 for Labor Day, principals and all school personnel seem ready and excited about the new year.

All Acadia Parish public schools report back on Friday. The private schools in the parish have a variety of start dates. Below is a time line that marks the start of schools in the parish:
