The chase began when Assistant Chief Ron Carrier with Pine Prairie Police Department attempted to stop a black SUV, heading northbound on Highway 167 North. At approximately 9:50 a.m., Chief of Police Robert Moreau with Turkey Creek Police Department entered the pursuit, and was almost hit head on by the vehicle. Keyes led law enforcement on a 30-mile pursuit exceeding speeds of 130 miles per hour on Highway 167 North. Keyes was reported to have escaped from a St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Correction Transport Officer while en-route to Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Correctional Center. Keyes allegedly freed himself from hand and leg restraints and jumped from the transport vehicle on Evangeline Thruway at Mudd Avenue.
After Keyes escaped, later that evening, he stole a black GMC Envoy out of St. Landry Parish and allegedly committed several burglaries that night.
Keyes was ultimately apprehended on interstate 49 southbound near mile marker 56, in Rapides Parish, by Chief of Police Moreau, with the assistance of Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Department, Pine Prairie Police Department, Louisiana State Police, U.S. Marshal Service and Opelousas Police Department. Keyes was also found to be in possession of illegal narcotics during the time of his arrest. Keyes was transported to Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Jail, where he was booked as a fugitive from Evangeline Parish.
Keyes was later transported to the Evangeline Parish Jail, where charges are pending the outcome of the investigation.
