And the effort wasn’t without its rewards: Starks’ 14-and-under summer team defeated the San Antonio Lightning, 46-37, recently to claim the Mid-America Youth Basketball Championships in Houston, Texas.
North Vermilion’s Jermerrio Lollis led all scorers in the title game with 16 points.
Starks’ 12-and-under team also fared well, placing second in the tournament that consisted of teams from the Houston area, San Antonio, Dallas and San Marcos.
The 12U team finished with just one loss - to eventual tournament champion San Marcos - and rounded out the weekend with a 64-18 thrashing of the Texas Flight.
“This tournament weekend was truly special,” said assistant coach Axel Vasquez, whose son Miguel plays on the 12U team. “It was a chance not only to spend time with family, but also to see our boys step up in a big way and really pull together as a team. The Building Better Boys experience has broadened Miguel’s view on life and sports, has taught him what it means to be a team player and has given us all an opportunity to be part of a larger family.”
That experience was exactly what Starks was trying to accomplish when forming the BBB program.
“This program is designed to improve participants’ awareness of the game of basketball while helping them to develop a team concept and to become a great asset to their team when they return to their respective schools,” said Starks.
