ABBEVILLE – The Abbeville Fire Department and other volunteer fire departments could not save two mobile homes that caught fire at the corner of South Airport Road and Donna Road, south of Abbeville.

The fire departments arrived at the burning mobile homes Wednesday at around 2 p.m. and by 3 p.m. both mobile homes were still burning.

One of the two mobile homes had no one living in it, while the other mobile home had a female and family. The female darted out of one of the burning mobile homes to a neighbor’s home to call 911.

The female ran to Mike Mestayer’s house to have him call 911.

After calling 911 he walked outside and saw his home was in jeopardy of catching fire. Fire blew into his yard and onto to his green Oak trees.

“I was very worried about my house,” he said. “It had not rained in a long time, and it was dry.”

He felt the heat and rushed to move his fiberglass saltwater boat in fear it may melt because of the heat.

He hosed it down, along with hosing his house down.

It was not determined at press time the cause of the fire or which mobile home first caught fire.

Parts of South Airport Road was closed to traffic while the fire departments fought the fires.

The fire burned Mestayer’s wooden fence, along with a car parked in front of one of the mobile homes.
