It was still USL in 1970 when the Cajuns played in a boql game when they played in the Grantland Rice Bowl held in Baton Rouge. The Cajuns suffered a heart-breaking 26-25 loss to Tennessee State.

Now, 40 years later and under a new name, UL-Lafayette is finally returning to post-season competition this weekend when the Ragin’ Cajuns will face the San Diego State University Aztecs in Saturday’s R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Action begins at 8 p.m. at the Mercedes Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Not only are the Ragin Cajuns honored with a bowl game following a successful season, three team members were named to the 2011 Sun Belt Writers All-Freshman Team.

Former Notre Dame standout Jacob Molbert is one of three Cajuns honored. Molbert is joined on the 30-player team by Cajun running back Alonzo Harris and offensive lineman Daniel Quave.

The Rayne native logged seven starts in 2011 and has emerged as one of UL’s regular strating inside linebackers as the season progressed. He is the Cajuns’ sixth-leading tackler with 61, including 27 solo stops and five tackles for loss.

Molbert is the son of Paul and Michelle Molbert of Rayne.
