He was charged following the May 2010 accident in which his vehicle hit another head-on on U.S. 165, killing his wife Sheila and Shannon Cox, driver of the other vehicle.
Serie, who in a letter to the Ville Platte Gazette published today admitted to smoking marijuana at the time of the accident, had seven of his 10 years suspended.
The coach was transporting his wife home from a hospital where she had received breast cancer treatments when the accident occurred.
After completing his prison time, he will be on supervised probation for three years.
He has remained Ville Platte coach until the disposition of his case was complete.
The Evangeline Parish School Board is seeking applicants for the post until March 23.
