Vehicle strikes, kills man preparing to change tire

LAKE CHARLES – A 44-year-old Lake Charles man was killed Sunday evening when preparing to change a tire on a vehicle on U.S. Highway 171 North.

State Police identified the victim as Vincent D. Austin

Troopers responded to the crash around 7 p.m.

The crash involved a 2006 Chevrolet van, driven by Leyla Austin, 36, of Lake Charles, and a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by Megan L. Schexnider, 25, of Lake Charles.

The Chevrolet was northbound when a tire went flat. Austin, 44, a passenger in the Chevy, was trying to remove a spare tire from the rear when the northbound Hyundai hit him and the vehicle.

Leyla Austin was wearing her seat belt and received moderate injuries. She was taken to Lake Charles Memorial Hospital. A 13-year-old girl in Leyla Austin’s vehicle was wearing her sea tbelt and received serious injuries. She was taken to Saint Patrick’s Hospital.

Schexnider was wearing her seat belt and received moderate injuries. She was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital.

The crash remains under investigation.
