Rather than retrieve his dog through normal channels, a man broke into the Eunice animal shelter to get his canine, Eunice police say.

The man and another took the dog and purloined two other pooches, officers claim.

According to records, Michael. W. Chataignier, Jr., 21, and Karl Helmer, 17, are charged with simple burglary, simple criminal damage to property and criminal trespass.

Chataignier’s dog, according to records, was among three captured running loose in the city and taken to the shelter adjacent to the Wastewater Plant by the impounding officer.

That night, Chataignier and Helmer allegedly broke into the shelter and took a German shepherd, a terrier and a pit bull.

Two of three animals have been recovered; the pit bull is still being sought.
