Police said Peter Batiste killed himself before officers, including a SWAT team, entered the McClellan Street apartment where he was.
Batiste was identified as a suspect shortly after the shooting death of Shantelle Williams on Mardi Gras day.
He allegedly fled the Fruge Street house after shooting her once in the chest.
