During an identical regional round match-up of last year seeing the two squads butting heads once again, Albany scored three quick runs in the very first inning for what seemed to be a day of redemption for the Lady Hornets.
Rayne answered with three hits but left runners on base through the first three innings of play.
But, that was short-lived.
Entering the bottom of the fourth inning down 3-0, the Lady Wolves began a game-changing run, seeing three base runners tag home for a tied ballgame with no outs recorded.
Rayne hurler Mariel Meche split the outfield fence for a three-run homer, knocking in senior teammates Kelsey Hollier and Tori Mott for a 6-3 lead.
The Lady Wolves scored another notch in the fifth inning as Alex Peltier began things with a double. Kourtney Boutin donated a sacrifice fly and Ariel Meche slapped in a RBI single, scoring Ariel Meche for a 7-3 lead.
The Rayne defense held tough once again in the sixth, and the Lady Wolves offense broke through with two more runs in the bottom. Mott tagged a single, Mariel Meche scored Mott on a triple, and Amanda Bourque knocked in Meche with a single of her own.
Albany made another attempt as they scored another run in sixth, but the Lady Wolves held too much of a lead and their defense never gave up for the regional win.
Mariel Meche collected another win on the mound for the Lady Wolves as she struck out six Albany batters while allowing only one earned run. She walked two with one hit batter.
Rayne will meet Catholic High of New Iberia Friday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the State Tournament.
The 2011 LHSAA -State Farm Softball State Championship Tournament will be held April 29-30, at Frasch Park in Sulphur.
