CROWLEY – When the 2011 prep baseball playoff brackets were released Wednesday afternoon there was little shock who was the top seed in 3A.

After going 30-2 on the season, the 3A defending champion Notre Dame Pioneers nabbed the top seed in its class. They will open the playoffs at home against Amite tonight at 6 p.m. at Miller Stadium.

The Pioneers are coming off of a great sprint toward the finish line of the season, winning six straight including a win Monday night at Teurlings Catholic, the defending champions of 4A.

Amite (13-10), meanwhile, hobbled to the end, going 3-3 in its last six games, taking two of three games from district 9-3A foe Albany, but losing its series with Jewel Sumner.

The Crowley High Gents (14-11) also finds themselves in the playoffs with the 17 seed. The Gents who started the year 1-5 and spent their season on a roller coaster full of ups and downs will face a team on a similar trajectory in 16-seeded Bunkie (18-9). Bunkie began it’s season on a 5-1 tear before dropping five out of six games. The remainder of the year was a see-saw with a 3-3 finish for the Panthers as well.

Crowley and Bunkie are set for a 6 p.m. bi-distirct playoff game start tonight at Bunkie.

The Pios and Gents seeding does set up the potential for an interesting second round game between the long time rivals, but both will need to get through the first round before they can start worrying about going head-to-head.

Finally, Class C will head straight into the regional round as the 16 teams that made the playoffs all earned first round byes.

As the fourth seed, Northside Christian (16-8) will host 13-seeded Kilbourne in the regional round.

Northside enters the playoffs on a nine-game winning streak with its last lost coming April 2 against Crowley High. The Warriors began the season 6-4 but continued to climb its way up the ratings over the season.

Kilbourne (7-11) did not have an ideal mid-season run. The Hawks started the year 3-1 and ended the year 3-3, but in the middle of the season, Kilbourne went 1-8, forcing the Hawks to try and climb back into the playoffs.

The Warriors and Hawks will go head-to-head in the regional round as both teams earned a bye in the first round.

One other Acadia Parish team made their way into the playoffs as Rayne (12-15) earned the 26th seed and will travel to 7-seeded Catholic-New Iberia (23-8) for the bi-district round.
